What is the Health Insurance Marketplace?

Also known as the Healthcare exchange, ACA, or Obamacare, the Health Insurance Marketplace is a service that helps people shop for and enroll in health insurance.

The federal government operates the service, and it can be found at HealthCare.gov.

Many different insurance companies offer plans on the Marketplace, such as BlueCross BlueShield, United Healthcare, and Aetna. Each plan must offer the minimum essential coverage as outlined by the government.

Here are some important things to know about Marketplace plans:

  • Millions of Americans now qualify for a subsidy and may pay little to nothing for one of these plans, even if you think you make too much money!

  • You cannot be denied coverage based on a pre-existing condition.

  • Some plans offer low deductibles and out of pocket expenses.

  • You cannot be covered by both Marketplace insurance and another major medical plan such as Medicare, Medicaid, or employer coverage.
